July 2012 Farm CSA Share

Leftover from June:
2 green garlic (Week 2) (Used in Veggie-Ham Bake - Week 1 this month)
part of a small lettuce (Week 3) (gave to my sister)
over a pound of assorted snow and sugar snap peas (Weeks 3 and 4) (Gave most to my sister)
1 bunch scallions (Week 4) (Used 3 in Filipino Lumpia - Week 1 this month, gave the rest to my sister. Although I read that you can place the bulbs in water and re-grow the scallions indefinitely. So I did that with the three we used, even though we don't need more. I read they're fast growers, which appears to be true, so it's fun for Little Z to watch!)
1 head bok choy (Week 4) (Used a few leaves in Filipino Lumpia, gave the rest to my sister)
1 bunch spinach (Week 4) (Finished off as salads - Week 1 this month)
1 kohlrabi (Week 4) (used in Veggie Ham Bake - Week 1 this month)

Week 1:

  • 1.5 lb snow or sugar snap peas [Z chose some of both, one. at. a. time] (mostly eaten in lunches)
  • 1 kohlrabi [got a purple one this time!] (used in Veggie-Ham Bake)
  • 1 head bok choy (gave to my sister)
  • 0.6 lb Rainier cherries (eaten in various lunches and snacks)
  • 1 bunch scallions (went bad. Booo!)
  • 1 bunch spinach (used some in Raspberry-Spinach Baby Mash in Week 2, finished off the rest as salads by the end of Week 4)
  • 3 pc green garlic (used one in Very Pink Dip, the other two in Filipino Lumpia
  • 1 head lettuce (gave to my sister)
  • 1 bunch greens [chose a kale assortment with some green and purple varieties - used in Honey Kale Chips and Kale baby mash Week 3]
Bought: bunch of beets (for Very Pink Dip,) sweet potato (for Puppy Jerky, made Week 2) cauliflower (for Veggie-Ham Bake and pizza crusts,) and a pint of raspberries. Z chose a carrot and some mint, and I grabbed a bundle of chives (for Very Pink Dip;) all from the "Free, Take It" box

Week 2:

Bought: small head cauliflower, smaller head broccoli, and 2 Yukon potatoes (all for Veggie-Ham Bake,) radishes (for Pink Dip)
Made: Veggie-Ham Bake (again,) Summer Rolls, Bok Choy baby puree, Raspberry-Spinach Baby Mash, Sweet Potato Puppy Jerky
Sweet Potato Puppy Jerky
Slice sweet potato (skins and all) thick into 1/4" rounds, dehydrate until feels chewy - roughly 4-5 hours. I hear dogs love it. I made some for my Foodie Penpal! Got the recipe from Shannon at BentoLunch.net

Week 3:
  • 1.25 lb snow or sugar snap peas (chose roughly half of each, still working on them)
  • 0.5 lb Rainier cherries (eaten in various lunches and snacks)
  • 1.35 lb assorted Summer squash (made into Squished Squash and Sunny Squash Brownies)
  • 1.25 lb young broccoli (still working on them)
  • 2 pc green garlic (used 1 in Green Mashed Potatoes, still have the other)
  • 1 head lettuce (romaine - ate some, rest went bad)
  • 1 bunch greens (chose kale - used in Kale Mash)
  • 3 containers raspberries (some for Baby Smoothies, the rest eaten in various lunches and snacks)

  • 1 bunch Red Kale
  • 1 bunch radishes
  • 1 bunch yellow carrots

  2. Sarah - CSA stands for Community Shared Agriculture. Basically, a farm figures out its operating costs, and divides that up into "shares," and then each contributor gets a chunk of everything produced on the farm. So you pay each week (or month, or season, depending on the CSA) and get a share of everything they grew that week. Many farms trade with others too, to give their members a wider variety.
Unlike a grocery, you don't pick and choose what you're getting. But most CSAs are organic, and all are local.
